Another excellent American high quality specimen. This year, in Tucson 2008, we have supposedly seen the best Red Cloud Mine Wulfenite specimens in the American Treasures Exposition, but we think that this one, with about 6 cm. (2½ inches) on edge, could be similar or maybe better! Extremely intense color! (Author: Joan Rosell)

Another exposed quartz pocket with wooden chopsticks for scale. Many sceptered quartz are head down in the pockets, possibly from the weight of the scepter head drawn down into the clay by gravity. Quartz crystals on the walls of the pockets are typically unremarkable and are simple hexagonal columnar specimens with "normal" terminations. It is interesting to note that many pockets only contain one or two nice crystals and the rest are insignificant in comparison. Ronna’s pocket was large enough to prove to be an exception. (Author: Tony L. Potucek)
-
Another exposed quartz pocket. Once surrounding granitics were pulled back, these pockets could be detected by gray to brown to blackish clay containing quartz shards. Probing with wooden chopsticks was key to extracting specimens with no or little damage. However, some pockets were totally crushed by tectonic activity prior to collector activity. (Author: Tony L. Potucek)

Another good locality in Brandenburg are the claypits around Bad Freienwalde, some 80 km in the east of Berlin. Another mineral which is widespread in northern Germany is flintstone. Some collectors do not understand why to pick up that stuff... But if they are as pretty as the shown zebra-like stone from the Segeberg forest near Bad Segeberg, Schleswig-Holstein it is worth it, I would say. 10 cm sample from a 1975 find. Another of my favorites. This Millerite always amazes people, especially those who know I have cats. It takes a couple of minutes with a 10x before they see the crystals for what they are. Teh field of view is 1 1/2" (3.8cm). It is from Keokuk County, Iowa. (Author: Jim Prentiss)

I have never bothered to extract it as it is in the side of a very large boulder consisting of extremely hard basalt. Not collected 2006. Still there 2013. (Author: Mike Wood)

Apophyllite + Thomsonite Moonen Bay, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK Crystals 17mm + 22mm Nice pair of larger apophyllite crystals from the same cavity, on a thin slice of basalt matrix, with white thomsonite. A feature of these apophyllites is the smaller thin crystals penetrating the larger ones; very interesting when magnified. Collected 2013. (Author: Mike Wood)

Apophyllite + Thomsonite Moonen Bay, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK 12mm crystals Close-up of the above specimen. Difficult to photograph unless the crystals are in profile. The terminations show pyramidal modification, but none that were found had actual pyramidal terminations. However, the terminations are so clear and mirror-like, it looks like they are pyramidal, because of the optical effect within the crystal. (Author: Mike Wood)

Apophyllite + Thomsonite Moonen Bay, Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK 9cm x 8cm x 5cm Undamaged cluster of transparent apophyllite crystals, to about 12mm, with ’feathery’ white thomsonite. Most of the specimens came out small because the basalt rock here is very hard, and the cavity lining was very thin. Hours were spent chopping out rock from around the cavity but still ended up with small specimens. Collected 2013. (Author: Mike Wood)
